This stone is metamorphic rock, containing varying amounts of dolomite and quartz. Larger proportions of quartz give it a more attractive, translucent appearance. It is used as a decorative construction material, in walls, monuments, and bridges.

Mariposite is a green chromium-bearing variety of mica. It was first described in 1868 from the Mother Lode country of California, where it is associated with gold-bearing quartz veins. It is closely related to fuchsite and muscovite micas.

Mariposite is referred to crystals which are generally composed of micas and have small traces of chromium in them. The term is most often used for gemstones that belong to a group of green and white metamorphic rocks containing a significant amount of green mica.
