The scariest time of the year in Chinese Folklore falls on the 7th lunar month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar . This year it falls on 4th of August 2024 to 2nd of September 2024.Hungry Ghost Festival aka Chinese Ghost Festival takes place traditionally on the 15th night of the 7th month (Sunday 18 August 2024- Ghost Day) which is sometimes called Chinese Ghost Month. The first lunar day of the 8th lunar month is on 3 September 2024.
it is believed that during this period, the gates of hell open, allowing ghosts to roam freely and indulge themselves for a month. As such, people are advised to be cautious to avoid any encounters with these spirits.
During Ghost Month, misfortunes such as poor health, property loss, and bad luck for families tend to increase. Consequently, people pay close attention and remain vigilant throughout the month.
It is wise to avoid making major decisions during this time. Initiating a new business or moving into a new house within the month is considered inauspicious.
Taoists and Buddhists perform special ceremonies and traditions to honor the spirits of ancestors and to protect against ghosts’ attacks. People believe the dead ancestors can bless and protect them during the festival in this way.
Here are some ways to prepare you, your home, and your business before this unholy period time of the year:
1. Wear protective amulets.
- Return to Sender & Anti Elemental bracelets (especially with St. benedict Medallion) are also good to keep malevolent spirits at bay

Travel for Protection Bracelets (especially with St. Benedict Medallion) are best for those who travel for work especially those who have to go home late at night
- Wearing protective bracelets like Morion Quartz, Hypersthene and etc. , as well as carrying , raw stones & palm stones like Black Tourmaline & Black Obsidian may also help protect you
- Wear St. Benedict Medallion blessed by a Benedictine priest (e.g. San Beda Church)
2. Smudge your home or light incense
- Smudging yourself and your home with White Sage, Mugwort (Damong Maria), Dragons Blood or Eucalyptus purifies your aura and your environment preventing unwanted spirit attachments. Best time to smudge is when the sun is about to set. Burning, Copal, San Miguel, and other protective incense sticks in front of the door this period may also work the same.

Palo Santo scent repels malevolent spirits and negative entities. Burn the wood at night before you sleep or when you arrive home.
- Burn incense to honor your ancestors. The smoke of Frankincense, Myrrh, Patchouli, Sandalwood if lovingly offered as a gift of respect and devotion, will please your ancestral spirits and in turn, protect your home
- Burn incense to to appease hungry ghosts, in order to prevent them from causing harm. Sweet smelling incense like Jasmine, Ylang ylang, Rose and other floral and citrusy scents would be like offering flowers and fruits to these masterless spirits that roam the mortal realm, meandering everywhere as they search for sustenance.
3. Take down your chimes and hang protection charms instead
- Ghosts are known to wander and be drawn to the sound, this can lead to unwelcome spiritual encounters. It's recommended to remove any wind chimes from your home during this time and hang Protection Hanging Charms on your doorways and windows.
- You may also opt to line your doors and windows with protective raw stones like Black Tourmaline, Black Obsidian, Blue Kyanite, or Black Kyanite
- Place blessed St. Benedict Medallion above the door and window sills.
4. Keep other spiritual protective tools handy
